Di kota Singa ini terkenal kalau anti banjir, hujan selebat apapun, segera setelah hujan reda, air surut dgn sendirinya. Membuatku takjub ketika melihatnya. Tapi rupanya hujan kemarin berbeda. Hujan lebat seharian penuh, bahkan sebenarnya hujan sudah mulai sejak hari Minggu yang lalu, membuat beberapa sudut kota kebanjiran. Membuatku terkejut, rupanya Singapur bisa banjir juga, tak sesakti yang kukira. Berikut adalah kutipan dari berita:
SINGAPORE: Singapore on Tuesday was hit by the third highest rainfall recorded in 75 years.
The 24-hour rainfall recorded was 366 mm.
This amount of rainfall recorded in one day exceeds even the average amount of 284 mm recorded for the whole month of December in previous years.
The highest amount of rainfall recorded over 24 hours in Singapore was 512 mm, in 1978.
The second highest rainfall recorded was 467 mm, in 1969.
Banjir bahkan diberitakan telah mencapai sebatas pinggang di beberapa tempat. Dan yang terjadi tidak hanya banjir dan pohon tumbang, tapi juga tanah longsor di beberapa tempat.
And it wasn’t just trees which felt the impact – over in southern part of the island, part of an empty old shophouse collapsed with debris spilling onto the street. The shophouse is located along Tong Watt Road near River Valley.
Rupanya banjir juga melanda negara tetangga, yaitu Malaysia.
A 24-hour deluge in Singapore and Malaysia’s southernmost state of Johor caused flooding, landslides and evacuation of 10,000 people to relief centres.
Continuous rainfall Tuesday caused almost all districts in Johor to be immersed in the floods, dubbed one of the worst in a century, state Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman said.
Water levels of four rivers in Johor rose to dangerous levels, and the pouring rain caused nine major landslides there, prompting the army to prepare 20 boats and a helicopter for rescue efforts as well as to deliver food and clothing to the affected areas.
Sebenarnya berita terbaru menyebutkan jumlah korban yang lebih besar, bahkan disebutkan pula kalau banjir ini adalah yang terparah dalam satu abad. Saya tak tahu kalau ternyata banjirnya bisa sedemikian parahnya. Saya sendiri hanya berdiam diri di kamar, jadi tak merasa apa-apa. =D

Singapur yang terkenal dgn saluran airnya yang tak pernah macet dan selalu lancar saja bisa banjir. Saya membayangkan, apabila hal serupa terjadi di bumi Indonesia, tentunya bakal terjadi bencana yg lebih parah. Memang manusia bisa berusaha sekuat tenaga untuk mengatasi alam. Tapi bila Tuhan berkehendak, siapa yg bisa melawannya?
